I am a recovering addict and a survivor of the sex industry. I have been sober and out of "the life" since 1993. Since that time I have dedicated much of my time helping those who were in the same situation. In 2003 I meet Marisa Ugarte, Executive Director of the Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition, who taught me about Human Trafficking and all of it's ugly faces.
Since I started my path in recovery, I participate in San Diego's "Prostitution Impact Panel" who has seen over 1,600+ sex-buyers, with a 3.5% recidivism rate.
I started the Survivors of the Streets (SOS) group, which the City Attorney's office uses as a First Offender Diversion Program for adults who were picked up for prostitution (647b) activities. Currently I do groups at Las Colinas Women’s Detention, County Jail have seen approximately 107 women who have been exploited on Monday morning’s. Of the 1,004 (SOS) participants, 51% could be construed as victims of Human Trafficking. SOS meets every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 am. I currently do groups at Alabaster Jar Project a program for HT victims on Monday's from 11:30 am to 1:30pm and teach Beyond Trauma and Betrayal Bonds. I currently do groups at La Jolla Recovery for women who have been exploited on Thursday's from 10:30 to 11:45 am. I teach “Ending The Game” a curriculum written by human trafficking survivors for human trafficking survivors.
I have done groups at the Girl's Rehab. Facility at Juvenile Hall who are both CSEC and high at-risk girls. We have seen 408, 14 of which were at-risk and the rest CSEC victims, with the goal to reeducate them so they may lead healthier lifestyles. We met the first 3 Fridays of the month from 3-5 pm.
I also do speaking engagements at universities, high schools, and other academic environments. I would love to educate you about human trafficking in our region.
Our program has won the Norma Hotaling Award, Chief's Award from San Diego County Juvenile Probation, recognition by New Alternatives, Inc. Recognition by North County Lifeline, City Attorney's office, the San Diego District Attorney's office I won the SEEDS of HOPE award by the Lynch Foundation and have been honored by STAT Soroptimists International.
